Hosted by Harold Burns, S.P.I.eS. is an opportunity for performing artists to show works-in-progress and other experiments, followed by a facilitated artist-centered feedback session (based on Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process). It is also a chance for the community to see fresh work and be in direct conversation with up and coming performers and creators.

Zoyres Eastern European Wild Ferment & Kugelplex!

Klezmer Chanukah Blowout!

musik, tantzin’, and noshin’!

co-sponsored by KlezCalifornia
Saturday December 4, 2010, 9pm
$10-20 suggested donation; no one turned away for lack of funds

Kugelplex and Zoyres will each play a dance set, and then come together as one big brazen band for the finale! Bruce Bierman will lead Yiddish dancing, and to keep up all that energy, we’ll have plenty of nosh (snacks) on hand – home-made by members of the band, Bruce, and community members (props to Shayna Marmar!).

Zoyres began around 2003 with the intent of approaching klezmer and Eastern European folk music from both a “traditional” perspective, as well as a stretched out and experimental one. A huge inspiration back then, and still, was Naftule’s Dream, a Boston based band that compellingly bridged traditional klezmer music with way-out experimental and jazz improvisational forms (think of the perfect band if Frank Zappa were to be Bar Mitzvah’d).

Kugelplex is the purveyor of fine-crafted, old-world party music. Formed in 2001, the group plays wild, soulful dance music at weddings, concerts and festivals throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

A Night of Acoustic Music

Sunday, December 5th at 8pm

Featuring local artists Ed Masuga, Professor Burns, and Matador

Matador, rockin' out

Ed Masuga is a finger-picking maniac; a one man folk and blues orchestra of beautiful clanks and calls. At two years old he saw his dad compete on the game show “Name That Tune,” and though the appearance netted just a jukebox and a trip to Puerto Rico, Ed’s future as a traveling musician had been fully inspired. Word has it he’s been playing with a full band lately, so best to keep a tight grip on your cricket cap.

Professor Burns and the Lilac Field mix raw, vivid, lyrical imagery with warm acoustic melody. Professor Burns will be playing solo. Check his music out at www.professorburnsandthelilacfield.com.

Matador’s music is pushed forward by the driving rhythms of Mathew’s guitar, while Dorota’s violin pulls the listener into another world. The instruments are overlaid by Mathew and Dorota’s harmonic vocals, singing lyrics that paint pictures of the interplay between humans and nature. Their songs are dynamic, full of changing tempos and moods that can switch from comfortably mellow to gut-wrenchingly intense in a heartbeat. Combining their musical experiences with flashes of Polish and American folk music, their songs are inspired by the interplay between creation and destruction. Visit their site at www.blackpowderrecords.com/matador/

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Dance/Screen

A program of dance-for-the-camera and other dance films

Curated by Charlotte Shoemaker and Daria Kaufman

We would like to invite dancers, choreographers, and dance filmmakers to submit entries to Dance/Screen for a program of dance films occurring at the Subterranean Arthouse in Spring 2011. In its previous incarnation with San Francisco Performances, Dance/ Screen could only show “work which would otherwise be unavailable to San Francisco Bay Area audiences.” Now in our current form, we look forward to showing local work as well. All entries should be submitted on DVD by February 1st, 2011 and sent to the Subterranean Arthouse, 2179 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA 94704, Attn: Dance/Screen. Please send the DVDs in an envelope, not a box. We are seeking highly innovative, quality work from both local and non-local artists. They do not need to be premieres. For more information and/or queries, email dariakaufman@gmail.com. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your work!
